This isn’t an official video from Research in Motion, however, this video reveiw of the BlackBerry 9780 does show BlackBerry 6 and the WebKit BlackBerry Browser running on a device with a QWERTY keyboard and no touchscreen. I will say that, since this is the BlackBerry 9870, I am a bit concerned about how BlackBerry 6 will run on The Bold 9700 which only has half the memory, 256 Mb, compared to the 9870′s 512, however, the operating system and the WebKit browser, from what we can tell, appears to be the same experience as what we’ve seen on the 9800… Just less screen real estate…

There is no ETA for delivery at this time though they do state “Status: Rumored. Exp. release 2010, 2Q.” Hopefully we will hear more about it at the August 3rd event next week… I am excited. It has been awhile since RIM has managed to build some serious hype for a device launch.

They just opened up the beta program for App World 2.0 for all users in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. The problem is that the bum rush of users trying to download the app has crashed RIM’s servers or at least overloaded them. Somebody from Akamai needs to give RIM a few lessons on using their CDN to handle load bursts like they do for App World.

In case you still want to try when things are back up you can pick up the beta in the beta zone at www.blackberry.com/beta. Currently you will just get a “Proxy Error” but try back in a few minutes or hours.

As a reminder App World 2.0 adds:

Split Top 25 Themes and Top 25 Apps

BlackBerry App World Barcode Scanning for easily grabbing apps by just taking a picture

More Billing Options

Credit cards – varies by region

Carrier billing – just pay for an app on your wireless bill

BlackBerry ID – a new device independent user identification for downloading apps and easily switching devices

That makes more sense because RIM is not in the habit of entering the retail space.

RIM has really had a slow rollout heading into China. It was only last month that they released the absolutely cutting EDGE BlackBerry Curve 8910 equipped with their latest technology. I kid but the device does at least have Evolved-EDGE but no Wi-Fi and a trackball instead of a trackpad.

RIM thinks that this BlackBerry Curve 8910 is such an amazing value proposition for the mainland Chinese market that they have opened up a Beijing store that they call an “experience center” for them to play with BlackBerry devices. I can imagine potential BlackBerry users lining out the door to try the latest 8910… Or even better yet they are also carrying the BlackBerry Curve 8310.

Here is to hoping they at least get some update love when BlackBerry 6 comes out…

PS: I am still trying to figure out if the store was actually opened by RIM or by Digital China. I will let you know if I find out.

Not only did we get a glimpse of a new device this week, but we saw it in many different forms. You know it’s not a major device when we get initial pictures, video, and more sets of pictures in the same week. Still, it’s something up RIM’s sleeve. We have that, plus what should amount to some big news about the 9800.

RIM working on the Bold 9780 w/ OS 6

That’s the first image we saw of the BlackBerry Bold 9780, courtesy of Salomondrin, who has been on a roll lately. We heard about this device a few months ago, and as expected it looks like a Bold 9700 refresh. The reason? The Bold 9700 has just 256MB of RAM, meaning it can’t run OS 6. As you can see from the home screen in this picture, the 9780 runs OS 6.

Later in the week Driphter came in with more pics. But it wasn’t until later in the week that they hit us with some additional excellence. They found some nice, full-body shots of the 9780, plus a video.

We haven’t heard when the Bold 9780 will drop, but I can’t imagine it’s too far behind the 9800.

Tip of the week: Speed up your BlackBerry browser. Because no one wants to deal with the load bar crawling along.

Signs point to 9800 announcement on August 3

When you get one of these in your email, you tend to get quite excited.

AT&T and RIM? Can it be anything other than the 9800? Sure, I guess it could be. But considering all the hype we’ve consumed over the last couple of months, and with the hints RIM itself has already dropped, it seems like a fair enough bet. We’ll be there, city rats that we are, and will try to get information out as it is announced. Given the number of places I’ve seen this invitation posted, I imagine it will be quite a crowded scene.

Want another sign that the 9800 is close? As BBLeaks reports, developers have been given the green light to submit their 9800 apps for App World. We’ve heard that there are plenty of 9800 demo units floating around to developers, so this makes plenty of sense.

The OS 6 home screen

There is plenty new going on in OS 6, but thankfully we have people on the inside bringing us that information. At Inside BlackBerry, Douglas Soltys talks to director of UX research Joey Benedek, who discusses, at length, the OS 6 home screen. It’s definitely worth the read — it reveals so much.

To me, the best part comes at the end when Benedek mentions that the Notification Dropdown is his favorite aspect of the new home screen. I love the notification dropdown on my Nexus One. It’s one of the best features of the Android platform. I’m going to love having that on my BlackBerry, too.

And if you’re a 9650 fan, you can check out some screenshots of OS 6 on a non-touch device.

Roundup

Check out our review of Calendar Pro. It’s a performance enhancer for your native calendar and tasks apps. We’re giving away 15 licenses, so make sure to leave a comment there.

Is RIM working on a landscape slider? Maybe. BBLeaks has the patent information, though this is not the first time we’ve seen file a patent for a landscape slider.

BlackBerry a threat to national security? I guess it depends on what country we’re talking about.

Virtual Vault stores your BIS email. Good for backingup emails without taking up device memory.

Apparently RIM bought BlackPad.com. This has everyone thinking that’s the upcoming tablet’s name. Maybe it is. But I don’t think domain registration is definitive enough an indicator.

Now here is a real head scratcher. AT&T has been shipping a large monolith display box to many of their stores. Gizmodo got a picture of the display but managers and store workers have no idea what is inside the big black box. They have dubbed it the “Hero” display and Gizmodo is guessing that it is either for the BlackBerry 9800 launch or the Dell Streak.

Out of the two my money is on the BlackBerry 9800 Slider since the Streak is not much of a secret. On the other hand RIM has been trying to channel Steve Jobs with the 9800 launch and all the secrecy. The people in the stores are being threatened with termination if they even joke about looking inside the box.

Anybody want to guess what is inside it?

Hopefully we will find out next week Tuesday at the joint AT&T & RIM event.

We told you when the app launched in June and since then they have processed over a million iTunes songs. The cool part about the service is that it is not a subscription but rather a one time $14.99 cost after a free 30 day trial.

The new features added to Music WithMe today add some refinement that the app was missing before. They include:

Support for iTunes playlist folders – sync your playlist folder on your BlackBerry and any subsequently added playlists to the folder are automatically synced to the device

New playlist info – In playlist screen, select ‘playlist info’ to view the number of tracks in the playlist that can be played, the number of unsupported tracks due to format or DRM protection as well as the number of tracks in the cloud, tracks needed from iTunes and tracks that can’t be found

Support for network attached storage/media servers

Support for playlists with duplicate names – user added "audiobooks" or "recently added" playlist

Playlist selection preserved across devices and if app is reinstalled

From the app you select which iTunes playlist you want synchronized with your BlackBerry and it does it for you wirelessly. The new version of Music WithMe is available at BlackBerry App World now. Let us know what you think of the update!
